Water Poi

Water poi are small cups with an open top that contain water to weigh them down. The centripetal force of the poi spinning keeps the water in the cup as long as the cup is spun at a consistent rate and/or brought to a stop smoothly.

These poi are versatile because the poi artist can put as much or as little water in the cup as they prefer, offering them various options to either develop dexterity or strength in their training. These tools are excellent for learning because they offer instant feedback: if you get wet, you didn't do it as well as you could have.

Here is a recipe for making your own water poi. You will need:

  • 12 - 18 inches of nylon (or other strong) string
  • two disposable plastic water bottles, 1 pint or liter in size
  • scissors
  • sharp object to puncture the plastic with
  • lighter
  • set of handles
  • key ring or quick link
  • 2 (or more) swivels
  • length of chain, sized appropriately for you

First, cut the bottom of the water bottles off so that you have two cups that are approximately the same size.

Next, puncture two holes in each cup on each side of the diameter. The holes should be approximately a centimeter down from the lip of the plastic. Melt the edges of the holes to harden the plastic so it does not shred as you spin the poi.

For each cup, thread half the length of string through the hole. Then, tie the string together to form a "handle" for the cup.

Attach the key ring (or quick link) to the "handle" for the cup. Next, attach your chain to the key ring, and then your swivel and handle at the top.

Fill the cups with water and spin away!
