The first measure of access to flow for practitioners is mastery of the 3 second rule. The 3 second rule states that the artist has achieved early levels of poi flow when they sustain a sequence of 20 seconds or longer wherein each occurrence of a base move (weave, butterfly, pinwheel) is performed no longer than 3 consecutive seconds without changing some aspect of the move (i.e., changing the visual effect created) and each occurrence of side circles (same or split direction) are performed less than 4 consecutive counts.
