Beginning Group Poi Fire Dancing Performance Boot Camp
Winter 2007/Spring 2008 Beginning Group Performance
Boot Camp is 31 hour class series for intermediate students
and beginning performers. This program helps artists develop a varity of skills by focusing on several areas of development.
The early winter sessions focus on fundamental drills, postures, and skills to help the artists diversify their repertoire and expanding their poi vocabulary. These sessions will be held in December 2007 and January 2008. This includes a 3 week break to work with these drills and moves. Sessions resume and meet weekly in January in preparation for the April 2008 Temple of Poi Fire Dancing Expo being held in Union Square as part of Bay Area National Dance Week. Students are encouraged to keep their calendar clear for the evenings of April 25 - May 1 until the final date of the show is confirmed.
The program meets 15 times over 5 months for 2 hours each session.
- Moves, Drills and Poilates classes are
focused on augmenting ones skills technically with poi. This
will include the skills most relevant for each student at their
current level of development as well as specific work on wall
plane work. The Poilates portions of the sessions are focused on the
meditative qualities of poi and generating movement from the
core of ones body.
- Performance sessions are focused on developing performance
presence and character while choreography sessions are dedicated
to creating and practicing the group performance piece for the
Temple of Poi 2007 Fire Dancing Expo.
- Combos and Choreography sessions are focused on flowing with the moves and performing them to a particular count. These are the sessions where the specifics of the performance will be taught.
- Assessment and individual
study sessions, along with 2 half hour private sessions with
GlitterGirl (to be scheduled on one of the tuesday evenings not
scheduled for a late class) are designed to analyze individual
needs of the students and work on the areas of development most
relevant for that student.
The class schedule is as follows with all sessions at 8 PM unless otherwise noted:

"Thanks Isa for all your hard work in our performance boot camp class choreographing and designing our Union Square performance piece. It was such an amazing experience to work with you throughout this year. From Burning Man to Burning Man. I've grown so much as a poi performer throughout all the various classes I've taken with you. My skills have improved immensely and in a very short amount of time, thanks to your instruction, time and dedication to your art form and school. I really loved taking the boot camp classes because it was an amazing way for me to build a solid connection and community with the other people in my class. I will miss our classes!"
~M. Weinberg; December, 2007
"The Spring 2007 Beginner Group Performance Boot Camp was a remarkable poi experience - advanced moves, choreography, timing, counting, the extended continuity of a group class and performing for the class. Not to mention the preparation for a performance and the performance itself! I learned SO MUCH. My confidence has greatly improved - both in performing and doing fire and my repertoire of poi moves has vastly increased. Boot camp is a fantastic way to take your poi practice to the the next level."
~ G. Lee; May, 2007
"The boot camp was a great way to enter the performance world. I got to see the group performance process from start to finish and more importantly, I learned the reasoning behind much of the decision making. My goals were aimed toward going from a solo performer to working within a group setting. During the boot camp, I learned time-based choreography and performed at very close proximity to other fire dancers." ~ A. Santos; May, 2007
I found the beginner's performance boot camp a good investment in my future as a performer, of poi and beyond. Isa, as well as my fellow bootcamp students, facilitated the learning of new moves, refining troubled moves, giving a glimpse into choreography, developing camaraderie between troupe mates, providing fodder for both personal and performance growth, and lending an air of support like I've not experienced so far in my life. By embracing more fully the tennants of flowology, we were able to evolve into "flowsters" where being in the moment and feeling the freedom to express ourselves came together in a beautiful expression of spinning poi and dancing. Thank you fellow students and Isa for making this an unforgettable journey and helping me to begin defining the path of my performance self.
~ M. Sanders; June, 2007
