Susan "Tiger Lily" Drews Watkins, student artist performing in Temple of Poi Fire Dancing ExpoSusan “Tiger Lily” Drews Watkins began dancing at age four and this childhood inspiration led her to ballet lessons where she danced in annual Nutcracker performances. She eventually discovered a preference for modern dance, where her ballet technique could evolve with greater vocabulary of movement and a new experience of improvisation.
Susan "Tiger Lily" Drews Watkins, student artist performing in Temple of Poi Fire Dancing ExpoIt was during her first trip to Burning Man in 1998 that she discovered fire dancing. While busy completing a Masters degree in Fine Art with a concentration in spatial arts (installation and performance art), she put this newfound dance possibility on the back burner. True to her fire spirit, she learned many forms of art making using fire including metal casting, welding, glass blowing, and flame working glass. Add all of these skills to a history of jewelry fabrication using a torch, and that is a lot of history of creating with fire. Upon completion of her MFA, she found a beginner fire dance class at The Crucible and began a new path of fire dance training.
Susan "Tiger Lily" Drews Watkins, student artist performing in Temple of Poi Fire Dancing ExpoTiger Lily discovered Temple of Poi and Isa “GlitterGirl” Isaacs around 2005 and began to pursue this new dance form more seriously. She loves the development of technical skills, the practice of “Flowology,” new dance vocabulary and the beautiful community of fellow dancers surrounding Temple of Poi. She now enjoys the many classes and performance opportunities available through Temple of Poi. Here she has found a perfect melding of love of dance, performance art, fire arts and the passion for creating with fire. She loves sharing her passion for this extraordinary fire art form with her audience.
