As we continue with our artist profiles for the Temple of Poi 2009 Fire Dancing Expo & 7 Year Anniversary, we spotlight Memory Elena who will be performing with the accompaniment of Pyrotation partner Pi Manley.
Memory grew up in San Francisco. Her attraction to object manipulation and the movement arts began in adolescence when she hooped, played with a baton and diabolo, and swung keychains and umbrellas on her walk to school. She was introduced to poi around 2000 through the local electronic music culture, and became obsessed with juggling for most of 2002 before again switching her focus to poi. She lit her first wicks in 2003, and began to perform with SF-based LSD Fuego in 2004.
For Memory, spinning encompasses exercise and reflex training, mediation and grounding, exhibitionism and expression, and the opportunity to interact and collaborate with an incredibly diverse community of other talented artists. Flow is her drug of choice.
Memory is skilled in poi, contact staff, double staff, triple staff, hoop, fans, floating wand, fire eating, and a little ball-, club-, and contact-juggling. She has performed at many Bay Area venues, including the DNA Lounge, Jelly’s, Mighty, Ruby Skye, and Xenodrome, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, as well as SF Decompression, the Crucible’s Fire Arts Festival, the Burning Man Fire Arts Expo, Fire Drums, the Humboldt Juggling Festival, the World Beat Festival, and 4 years in the Burning Man Fire Conclave. She has provided individual and small group instruction since 2005, and has taught fan workshops up and down the Cali coast. She currently performs with Pyrotation and the Vulcan Crew.
