Bevin "Meco" Bernal

GlitterGirlAfter being dropped into California in 2002 from the strange alien planet that is West Virginia, this small town girl has been wallowing and engrossing herself in the San Francisco dance and music scene.

In October 2004, while in exploration of her education in visual arts and illustration, she stumbled across this wonderful form of dance that had been incorporated with these curious little light-up balls being swung around on strings or nestled down into the toes of socks.

Since first seeing these incredible creations, which she later learned were a beautifully adapted mutant form of an ancient form of story telling, weapons training, and dexterity tool, she was completely hooked – Her first set of poi was a pair of old black trouser socks with pocket change dropped hastily into the toes.  After hosing her roommates with change, night after night for about 3 months, she drilled herself on all the basic moves… But had no way to connect them.

In stepped the Temple of Poi in January of 2005, and thankfully began to lend a little direction to the flailing, fledgling artist.  From there, the whole object manipulation community opened up before her and what was once a narrow little world suddenly became an endless source of growth and entertainment.  Not only was there poi, but also there was a whole range of toys to play with, dance with, and express herself with!  Excitedly she began picking up and spinning everything she could, ranging from the Hula Hoop to Double Staff, Single Staff, Flow Wand, and even some novice Contact Juggling.

"Since 2005 I have practiced daily, connecting with the meditative flow that brings peace to a somewhat restless, and overwhelmed soul.  When I am lost, I find my way home through this meticulous routine that never gets old.  When I dance, I thrive in the endless energy that sounds me, breathing more life into an already blissfully breathless existence.  The beautiful musings and blessings of those around me, enjoying and partaking in this endless learning experience, and allowing me the privilege to teach, learn from, and make an infinite moment with, are truly the beings that make this world worth living in."
