Won't I get burned?

Fire can burn you and you might get burned. That said, if you wear fire safe clothing (natural fibers), cover your hair, follow Temple of Poi fire safety guidelines and respect the fire, you most likely will not get burned. Have you ever run your hand through a candle? Did you get burned?

Isn't playing with fire dangerous?

Playing with fire can be dangerous. So can crossing the street. A lot of people play with fire because it can be dangerous. Understanding how to respect the fire and handle the dangers safely is part of what makes playing with fire fun.

Read About

Safety warning: Temple of Poi hereby informs you of your individual responsibility to seek adequate knowledge and safety information to qualify you to spin fire. You are advised to seek appropriate educational knowledge on fire tools and safety techniques, including but not limited to safety precautions; legality of fire permits in your local jurisdiction; appropriate fuel storage, containment, and transport; safety personnel and fire equipment extinguishment; fire tool disposal; and all other aspects of fire safety as related to fire dancing.
Can I drink and play with fire?

Temple of Poi strongly advises sobriety and clarity each and every time the artist lights up. Since the art form requires a high degree of coordination, anything which impedes that coordination is ill advised -- including drugs, emotional duress and yes, drinking.

What should I wear when I spin fire?

The three things we recommend for every new fire spinning is the first time they spin to wear:

  • natural fibers (cotton, denim, suede, leather, silk, etc.), as they won't burn
  • cover your hair completely
  • wear a long sleeve shirt and closed toed shows

It is also a good idea to avoid wearing:

  • baggy clothes
  • clothes with big sleeves
  • synthetic clothes
  • clothes with strings
